My CNC Journey-Grenville Bamford

I purchased the FoxAlien XE 8040 Pro in January 2025, opting for the 8040 size upgrade at the time of purchase. This is my second CNC machine, so I came into this with realistic expectations and a decent baseline for comparison.

Overall, the XE 8040 Pro has been a fantastic upgrade and has proven to be a capable, reliable machine for woodworking and detailed carving projects.

Build Quality & Assembly

The machine feels solid and well-built for its class. Assembly was straightforward, and everything lined up accurately. The larger 8040 work area is a big improvement over smaller desktop CNCs and makes real projects much more practical to run in one setup.

Performance & Cut Quality

Out of the box, the machine performed well. I’ve used it for:

• Puzzle-style carvings
• 2.5D relief work
• Detailed engraved signs and artwork

The accuracy and repeatability have been very good for a machine in this price range. With proper feeds, speeds, and workholding, the results are clean and consistent. The projects in the photos are just a small sample of what it’s been producing.

Upgrade to Y-Axis Linear Rails – Huge Improvement

A few weeks after purchase, I upgraded the Y-axis to linear rails, and this has been absolutely worth it. The difference in rigidity and smoothness is noticeable right away:

• Less flex
• Smoother motion
• Better consistency in deeper passes
• Improved overall feel of the machine

This upgrade has made the XE 8040 Pro feel far more “dialed in” and confidence-inspiring, especially when working on larger pieces or doing longer toolpaths.

Who This Machine Is Great For

If you’re:

• Upgrading from a smaller CNC
• A serious hobbyist
• Someone looking to produce clean woodworking projects, signs, and art pieces

…the XE 8040 Pro hits a really nice sweet spot between affordability and capability.

Things to Keep in Mind

• Like most CNC machines in this class, it benefits from tuning and upgrades (linear rails are a great example).
• Dust collection and workholding matter a lot—once those are dialed in, the machine really shines.
• There’s a learning curve if this is your first CNC, but documentation and community support make it manageable.

Final Thoughts

This has been a very satisfying purchase and a clear step up from my first CNC. The FoxAlien XE 8040 Pro has proven to be reliable, accurate, and capable of producing genuinely nice finished pieces. With the linear rail upgrade, it feels even more solid and professional.
